Sensual History & Facts About Valentine’s Day

February 14th has been a day of love and pleasure for a very long time. In 1537, King Henry VIII (yes, the one with six wives) declared February 14th and Valentine’s Day as a public holiday for love, and the tradition has persisted ever since. Five centuries later, a lot has changed about the way we interact with intimacy and pleasure, but we still love to celebrate love. With such a spicy holiday, a lot of interesting things tend to happen on or because of the Day of Love.

A Quick History of Valentine’s Day

The current version of Valentine’s Day has been around for centuries, but the holiday actually has much deeper roots in history. It started as a medieval Catholic holiday intended to disrupt the Roman pagan festival of Lupercalia. During this festival, people would place their names in urns and potential partners would pull names out at random.

Sexy Facts About Valentine’s Day

Condom Sales On Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a great excuse for people to get close to each other. Condom companies see up to 70% more sales around Valentine’s Day every year. Our condom tips: find a brand that works with the circumference of your or your partner’s penis (condom brands will provide this information on their website). Try adding a few drops of Aqua Heat warming lube inside a condom (and outside) for enhanced sensation.

Always use lube with condoms to prevent bacteria-inducing microtears in skin, increase pleasure, and decrease friction. The CDC estimates that 75% of the adult U.S. population is carrying HPV, which is transmitted from skin-to-skin contact. Using lube helps decrease friction and microtears which may introduce bacteria and viruses, such as HPV, to the bloodstream.

Intimacy Doesn’t Mean Sex

According to a study from Good In Bed, 65% of people plan on being intimate with someone on Valentine’s Day. However, that intimacy doesn’t have to include sex. Some people plan on sending a spicy text to a crush or long-distance partner, exchanging sensual massages, giving a thoughtful gift, or taking part in a fun activity together.

If you do decide to have sex with a partner, the same survey notes that 55% of respondents would try something new in bed, just because it’s Valentine’s Day. It’s the perfect opportunity to try out a new sensation lube or flavor you’ve had your eye on.
